Lucy Tissue Case (Vintage Quilt)

These are my new favorite thing to have around my house and car! They are in every room, and everyone in my family has one hanging next to their bed. Last Spring while sick and after 9yrs of being parent, I had finally had enough of mashed and mangled tissue boxes all over the house! I’ve had this idea of a JUMBO tissue case rattling around in my head for years always saying “someday i’m gonna make” but never sitting down to work it all out and make it happen. That is until the stars aliened and frustration prevailed one sick morning after school drop off while I needed a tissue in the car and all I had was a box that had been stepped on and crushed more times than not. And just like that the Grandma Lucy Tissue Case was born!!! In fact it was inspired by my Grandma Lucy’s travel size tissue case that I have kept for years but never used. I had never really even examined it until making its big sister version, which I’m so thankful that I did because upon examining it and looking closely at its stitches I realized it was hand done. Making it all the sweeter in recreating it.
While these ready made Lucy Tissue Cases were not hand sewn by me, many them come from quilts that were hand sewn by other quilter. When working with vintage I often wonder whose hands made this, was this gifted to a loved one to be used and cherished, or were they used and wore out by those very hands that made it? While I will never know the answer to those questions, it is and honor to save every piece I can from the trash bin.
Every Lucy Tissue Case made from a vintage quilt is a ONE of a kind. Some have been mended a little and some a lot. Sizes Vary based on quilt scraps, all cases have hanging loops, and they are fully lined with Kona Cotton.
